Switzerland claimed a comfortable 2-0 win over Moldova in a 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™ Group 2 qualifier, taking the lead in the first half and sealing victory with a late header.
Moldova goalkeeper Stanislav Namasco saved a fierce early shot by Swiss striker Alexander Frei but three minutes later Frei struck again from 15 metres and the ball flew past Namasco into the corner of the net.
The Swiss squandered several opportunities to extend their lead and Moldova's only real chance came in the 50th minute when Igor Bugaiov's penalty struck the post. Gelson Fernandes, who came in as a substitute in the 79th minute, sealed the victory late in stoppage time when he nodded the ball home from five yards.
Switzerland move joint-top of the group with Greece on 10 points from five matches, while Moldova stay bottom.
Emmanuel Adebayor marked his comeback from injury with a goal to guide Togo to a 1-0 win over Cameroon in their 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™ qualifier.
The Arsenal forward, who had been out for six weeks with a hamstring problem, took advantage of an 11th-minute slip by defender Andre Bikey to settle the opening Group A game in the final round of African qualifiers.
Adebayor, the African Footballer of the Year, went on to complete the 90 minutes in Accra, but blotted his copybook by missing a second-half penalty.
The match was played in neighbouring Ghana because Togo are banned from using their home stadium after rioting two years ago. Togo also qualified for Germany 2006.
In Group B, Tunisia recorded a 2-1 victory over Kenya in Nairobi. Issam Jemaa grabbed the 72nd-minute winner, two minutes after Kenya had equalised with a tap-in from Dennis Oliech.
David Beckham insists he is happy to play a bit-part role for England despite becoming his country's most capped outfield player. Beckham passed Bobby Moore's previous record of 108 caps when he came on as a half-time substitute in Saturday's 4-0 friendly win over Slovakia.
On his 109th appearance in an England shirt, Beckham proved his continued worth to the side, setting up Wayne Rooney with a cross for England's second goal. Beckham's impressive cameo will have given coach Fabio Capello food for thought as the Italian prepares to pick his team to face Ukraine in Wednesday's 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™ qualifier.
A win for England would cement their position on top of European qualifying group 6 and keep Capello's team firmly on course to qualify for next year's FIFA World Cup. Capello started the Slovakia match with Tottenham winger Aaron Lennon on the right flank and his pace caused Slovakia problems at times.
Brazil drew 1-1 away to Ecuador in their 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™ qualifier on Sunday thanks to an outstanding performance from goalkeeper Julio Cesar.
Ecuador outplayed the five-times world champions but were repeatedly foiled by the Inter Milan goalkeeper and then fell behind when substitute Julio Baptista scored in the 74th minute. Another substitute, Cristian Noboa, restored some justice by equalising in the 89th minute, after a pulsating game at the Atahualpa at 2,800 metres above sea level.
Brazil have 18 points from 11 games in the ten-team South American qualifying group, five behind leaders Paraguay, while Ecuador have 13. Brazil, who drew for the sixth time in the campaign, were short on ambition and Ronaldinho made a negligible contribution before being replaced by Baptista.
Any notion that the final phase of African Zone qualifying for the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™ would be a perfunctionary exercise was quickly dispelled at the weekend, confirming the prospect of another absorbing campaign over the next six months. From the kick-off of the first of the ten weekend games to the conclusion of the last, the form book was thrown out of the window and surprise results quickly brought about the conclusion that this will be a final run-in of much intrigue.
Almost all of the 20 sides proved their competitiveness in the opening games of the final group phase of Africa's preliminaries. Togo began the weekend with a shock victory over Cameroon, on neutral ground in Accra, with Emanuel Adebayor announcing his return from a hamstring injury with the game's only goal.
The last game on Sunday night saw the traditional order again shaken up again as African champions Egypt were held at home by Zambia. The Pharaohs, among the favourites to qualify for South Africa 2010, let a first-half lead slip and eventually had to share the points in a disappointing 1-1 home draw with Zambia.
But the biggest upset of the weekend was reserved for Casablanca on Saturday night, when Gabon beat Morocco 2-1. It is a result that has suddenly catapulted the Azingo Nationale into the continent's conscience, and set them up as potential spoilers in their group.
Poland goalkeeper Artur Boruc has been dropped from the side after a nightmare 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™ qualifying display against Northern Ireland on Saturday, Leo Beenhakker has confirmed.
"Of course what happened last Saturday evening in Ireland affected the whole team, but especially in this way Artur Boruc," Beenhakker told reporters ahead of Wednesday's home clash with San Marino.
Besides letting in two Northern Ireland goals - the first of which Beenhakker called a "present" to the hosts - Celtic's Boruc mis-kicked a back pass from a team-mate, allowing the hosts to stretch their lead to 3-1. Beenhakker said the third goal "killed" Poland.
